Embark on a journey into history and culture entwined in the African-American experience with new book of recipes…and more!

(EMAILWIRE.COM, February 11, 2019 ) Outskirts Press—the fastest-growing, full-service self-publishing and book marketing company—is pleased to announce the release of New Century Soul Food Cooking: An Experience in African-American Heritage and Culture by Dr. M. Virginia Perry. This newly published cookbook features a unique blend of recipes and historical vignettes, and a strong cultural theme of resilience, tradition, necessity and culinary artistry throughout.

Cooking is art—and Soul Food cooking is a very personal, individualized kind of art. Unlike traditional cookbooks, New Century Soul Food Cooking appeals to those who fundamentally like to improvise, explore and try new ways of doing old things. It is written for the modern, busy consumer who is willing to combine something new with something old. The cook is encouraged to personalize each recipe using those flavor enhancers and cooking methods that most appeal to her or him.

But Dr. Perry’s new book is much more than a collection of treasured soul food recipes. In New Century Soul Food Cooking, she has created a collage—a patchwork quilt of African-American experiences to share with the American public. Her own rich and complex background has given birth to a book steeped in heritage and culture—the African journey in America.

About the Author: Born and raised in a ghetto in Philadelphia, in the post-Depression era, Dr. M. Virginia Perry was one of seven African-American children who integrated an all-white neighborhood’s school, traveling miles each day to be educated in the Philadelphia school system’s experiment in integration. After marrying and moving to Vineland, New Jersey, Dr. Perry became the first African-American to be hired at the Vineland NJ Bell Telephone Business Office. She then taught in the public school system until her retirement in 2003. She was Vineland’s Teacher of the Year in 1988 and won the New Jersey Black Educator's Award in 1990. She and her students built and maintained a small African-American Heritage Museum for a number of years before her retirement. Dr. Perry is a graduate of Penn State University, Glassboro Teachers' College (now known as Rowan University), and the Philadelphia College of Bible, now known as Cairn University. She received her doctorate in Marriage and Family Therapy from the Union Institute in Cincinnati, Ohio. She is also the associate pastor of Transforming Truth Ministries in Vineland, NJ. She is mother to three adult children, a daughter and two sons, and grandmother to two adult granddaughters. Her interests are varied and many, one of which, of course, is writing.
