Acoustic Wave Sensor Market by Type (Surface Acoustic Wave, Bulk Acoustic Wave), Device (Resonator, Delay Line), Sensing Parameter (Temperature, Pressure, Humidity), Vertical (Military, Automotive, Industrial) and Geography - Global Forecast to 2023

(EMAILWIRE.COM, December 03, 2019 ) The acoustic wave sensor market is expected to grow from USD 0.4 billion in 2016 to USD 0.9 billion by 2023, at a CAGR of 10.7% during the forecast period of 2017 to 2023.

How the immense scope for growth in the automotive industry can offer more opportunities for the acoustic wave sensor market?

The automotive industry is known for adopting new sensor technologies for automotive safety systems. These systems have become advanced, sophisticated, and efficient over time. The automotive industry strives to use new technologies for reducing the number of accidents and decreasing the impact of accidents. Acoustic wave sensors play an important role in achieving these targets, where these systems assure a vehicle safety to the occupants. The awareness among the governments and consumers for the safety of vehicles is one of the major factors which are expected to further drive the acoustic wave sensor market. The increasing demand for microelectromechanical sensor (MEMS) technology that uses new sensor technologies for applications such as pressure sensing in tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) will drive the acoustic wave sensor market in the forecast period. The MEMS technology plays an important role in the automotive industry as it reduces cost and space of SAW sensors. SAW sensors are mainly deployed in this industry to sense the fluctuations in the physical parameters such as pressure, temperature, and torque. These sensors have limited applications in the automotive industry, such as torque sensing in electronic power steering, TPMS, and combustion engine monitoring; however, the application area is expected to broaden with the increasing advancement in technology.

Why replacement of SAW-based sensors by other sensors in conventional applications remains a major challenge?

Acoustic wave sensors are predominantly used in special applications, where the sensors have to withstand severe conditions introduced by heat, radiation, or electromagnetic fields. These sensors are also used in the application demanding the device having a long life with no need of frequent maintenance. However, these applications cover only the niche markets. Besides, in the other conventional applications such as temperature measurement in the automotive industries or pressure measurement in healthcare devices, the working environment for sensors is very extreme. Other types of sensors, such as piezo-resistive and Silicon (SI)-based sensors, are more than capable for such applications, as these sensors have higher sensitivities and can be deployed in extreme work environments. All these factors may limit the penetration of acoustic wave sensors in the markets for these verticals.

Technical issues associated with energy consumption and sensitivity

Gas sensor devices, although having increasing demand, face certain problems that are yet to be addressed. Some of the major problems associated with the gas sensor devices are high energy consumption; small size; and sensitivity to environmental factors. Sensor size is an important factor in the case of portable gas detector devices that are used in few applications, such as building automation. Energy consumed by gas sensors is an important factor as it contributes to the overall power consumption of the systems deployed in the automotive and industrial applications. Devices built on metal-oxide-semiconductor technology consume more power than the electrochemical devices. Gas sensors face difficulty with the maintenance of a high level of sensitivity to detect different gases under high humidity conditions. Various sensors have different sensitivities, and their functionality is specific for particular atmospheric conditions. A variety of SAW-based gas sensors are used for gas sensing, and the oscillators are considered to be the key unit of the SAW-based gas sensor.
