Helen Monson’s irrepressible sense of adventure gets her into all sorts of crazy situations, and she has the bravery to share them in gloriously humiliating detail in part one of her memoir. But it isn’t just the adventures; it is also the compassion and

(EMAILWIRE.COM, January 29, 2020 ) Despite poverty and stress, Helen Monson offers a memoir that focuses on joy and adventure, while providing a poignantly authentic lens on her family and herself. No Ordinary Life is the first book of The Greatest Gamble series, compiled by her daughter Kim Poole, covering Helen’s life from her earliest memories through junior high. It has been published by Outskirts Press—the fastest-growing, full-service self-publishing and book marketing company.

In our modern age of streaming media and scheduled recreation, it’s easy to forget what childhood used to be like—the everyday discoveries and delights, the hilarious catastrophes and small triumphs. No Ordinary Life is a time machine, taking the reader back to Depression-era Salt Lake City, where Helen grew up:

“Spring was here! I coaxed Mama to let me leave my coat home. That way everyone could see my new dress! And that gave me two things to brag about, because most of the children were still cumbered with their winter coats. I was so excited at being center stage. I was talking nonstop as we arrived at school, and opened the doors to the long closet in back to remove our coats. As I sat, I became aware of an unusual silence. Strange. The bell hadn’t rung. I looked around to see what was the matter, and I heard some giggles and whispers, and I saw a girl point at me. I looked at me too. I was sitting there in my petticoat. Instantly I knew what had happened. I had absentmindedly taken off my button-down-the-front dress as if it were my coat, and hung it up with everyone else!”

When Helen passed away, Kim Poole inherited more than 20 boxes of her written material. Now Kim has compiled Helen’s vivid first-person memories into a three-part series. “My mother grapples with questions about right and wrong, God, social norms, and her role as a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints,” Kim explains. “As a granddaughter of Joseph F. Smith and a great-granddaughter of Heber C. Kimball, she talks frankly about being part of a loving family with polygamous roots and the close kinship she felt with her many, many relatives. Mom’s stories have all the feel of great historical fiction, with the added bonus that they are real. No Ordinary Life is enjoyable reading for all ages.”
