Codis Hampton II enlisted in the US Army as a teenager and served a tour in South Korea from 1961 to 1963. Discharged in 1965, he returned home to Milwaukee, married, had three children, but found no real job prospects. After closing his gift and records shop, he relocated to the Oakland/San Francisco Bay Area, retired as a procurement director from a Department of Defense site, and found his true calling in writing. Among the five books he has authored are Gracie Hall-Hampton, a novel about his grandmother's life in Jim Crow's South, and Unchon-ni, about his tour in South Korea.

“My varied experiences, compelling interests and inherited common sense led me to write social commentary,” Codis explains. “Whether it’s humorous or severe political commentary, my perspective differs from the norm. I’m fascinated by man’s career, social and political expectations, intrigued by how the ramifications of one’s choices affect one’s everyday life. And the actions or inactions of people keep me wondering, what will they do next?”

Codis “Hamp” Hampton II would like his epitaph to read: “God gave him the gift of observing while interpreting his and others’ lives with a curious mind. He surrounded himself with a loving family and as a member of a unique race of people. Eventually, discovering his calling to tell the world of his observations, Hamp played the hand dealt.”
